MA DISSERTATION - 2009 - ANDREW LONG - THE UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS, LEEDS, UNITED KINGDOM.
ABSTRACT: The purpose of this dissertation is to examine and discuss the opinions and views expressed in Internet Video Logs and Web Logs which question and challenge the professional practices of British Sign Language Interpreters. Drawing on content from the self-broadcasting Internet engine, YouTube, and by comparing and contrasting comments and discourses from on-line discussion groups, issues of “blacklisting” of Deaf clients, complaint procedures, feedback techniques and Interpreter/Deaf power dynamics are examined. Included are the notions of Goleman's Emotional Intelligence, Foucault's theory of the Power/Knowledge phenomenon and Luft and Ingham's “Johari Window” feedback model.
