Copyright Issues?

CopyrightWe would actively encourage you to retain your copyright whenever possible. For more information on author's rights and retaining copyright please see the Copyright Toolbox for authors and the Versions Toolkit (pages 11-12). The SPARC Author Rights Initiative is also a useful source of information.

However, as the Open Access movement gains momentum, more and more publishers are allowing authors to deposit their articles in repositories. You can check the copyright restrictions for each article you would like to reposit/upload by using the SHERPA/RoMEO database and thus, ensure that you are not infringing any agreement signed.

  • Most publishers are repository friendly - around 91% of journals allow archiving of journal articles, subject to conditions, in public repositories.
  • A few publishers have embargo periods (e.g. 6 months) which need to be spent before papers can be made available on a public repository.
